The next stop when visiting here is the city of Paarl. Just like Abraham Gabemma, who first discovered this area in 1657, the first thing you will be enthralled by will be the three rounded domes of a giant granite outcrop, the first prominent site here. The second one will be the vineyards growing in between the residential neighborhoods here, giving the city sized town a down home country feel. The world famous Main Street is nearly 11 kilometers long, and features historical landmarks like the Die Oude Pastorie Museum, Strooidak Churh, and of course the Laborie homestead. The is aslo the Gymnasium and the Patriot building as well, and the Afrikaans Language Museum is close by. Over twenty five different wine cellars are also here, along the Paarl Wine Route, also known as the Red Route, because of the wide variety of red grapes that are grown here, including Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, and Cabernet Sauvignon, just to name a few. A few other items of importance here are the Cathedral Cellar, a magnificent barrel vaulted roof with huge red carved wine vats. There is the KVW cellar complex, covering more than 20 hectares, the largest in the entire world. Last but certainly not least is the Afikaanse Taal Monument. This famous icon sits on top of Paarl Rock, and was erected in 1975, and commemorates Afrikaans as the language of the area, a dialect of the Dutch language. There are many things about the town of Stellenbosch that you can't miss. The name itself is synonymous with wine making, and for many reasons. Not only is it the most famous and oldest route in the whole country, but this town is also world renown for its experimental wineries, and has the only college int the country with oenological and viticultural departments. Stellenbosch is also the second oldest town in all of South Africa, and you can see it in the Victorian, Cape Dutch, and Georgian Architecture. Dorp Street, the oldest in the town, is a National Monument in itself, and has many water furrows, secluded lanes, and spectacular views of the orchards, and the vineyards that make this town famous, as well as excellent views of the surrounding mountains. With its many coffee bistros and restaurants that offer a cosmopolitan flair this can be a great starting point for visiting the other jewel that this quaint village has to offer. The Stellebosch Conservatoire is the oldest and perhaps the most famous music school in South Africa. It is home to the area's most important cultural center, with many museums and galleries, protecting a wide collection of national as well as international art. There are many other sites that attract people here as well. There is the Jonkerhoek Nature Reserve, the 24 kilometer Vineyard Hiking Trail, and the Stellenbosch Wine Route, which can be started at the tourist office on Market street. These are just some of the few towns and attractions that the Cape Winelands area has to offer. Some of the other attractions to note here is the Assagaaibosch Nature preserve, Groot Drakenstein Prison, the Valley of the Huguenots, and of course the famous Butterfly World, a 1,000 square acre tropical green house, where butterflies as far away as China, Costa Rica and Malaysia can be seen.
